Cook & Vermilion Lake  (West End)

Most lake names in Northern Minnesota pay homage to the Native Americans. Vermilion is no different. It was known to the Chippewa as the "Lake of the Sunset Glow." Perhaps the name is the result of the fire-red horizon at sundown, perhaps the result of the incredible displays of aurora borealis. Whatever the case, the billions of stars sparkling like diamonds in the night time sky will leave you breathless. Whether you prefer fishing, boating, hiking, berry-picking, birding or just plain relaxing, Lake Vermilion is a great place for a great vacation!

Fishing Report:  July 21, 2008

Hi Everybody,

The Walleye action has been much better this week and it looks like the bug hatches are finally over. Mainlake reefs and gravel bars have been getting better by the day as big schools of Walleyes have begun to relate to their typical summer locations. Lindy rigs tipped with a crawler or a leech, are the go to presentation for most anglers. I have been running a 3 to 4 foot snell with a single bead and a red number 6 hook. Most of the action has been in the 18 to 25ft range during the day.

The Muskie action has been a bit better however it's still tough during the mid day hours. Early morning and the late evening into the first few hours after dark, have been the best times to be fishing. Big hair and minnow style crankbaits have been moving fish. I'm also doing well on single Colorado blade spinnerbaits in the thicker cover. Water temps have finally warmed into the low 70's in the past few days and it looks like they may finally stay there.  The action on the west end has been a little better than the east end in recent days, however it's getting better all over the lake.

The Smallmouth action has been steady for the most part. There is still some pretty good action along the shoreline, but most of my larger fish have been out on deeper structure. Inshore humps and rockpiles and mainlake islands with flats or long points, have really started to light up in recent days. Rocks, docks, saddles and deep reeds have also been producing very well. Cranks, spinnerbaits, topwater baits and soft plastics, are all catching their share of fish. Crawfish patterns have been very hot, so keep that in mind when making your bait selections.

The Pike action has been steady however not spectacular. I have been getting a good number of smaller fish on a variety of baits. All the larger fish have been coming on jerkbaits or spinnerbaits out on windblown points and along the deep weed edges in 6 to 12 ft. Large Pike love the wind,so get out and take advantage of it when the opportunity arises. Large minnow style cranks and jerkbaits can be stone killers on windy days.

Have a great week everybody and please remember to put some back.

Use the tip of the knife to follow th rib cage Filleting Smallmouth Bass
I'm convinced that there is no "easy" way to fillet a smallmouth bass (
Micropterus dolomieu)- at least I have never observed a way that is any easier than the way I learned.  And one of the major problems is the result of the incredibly thick bones of the rib cage.
Insuring Your Boat
When I bought my first boat, a friend asked me if I knew that a boat was defined as a hole in the water, into which I would be throwing a lot of money.  I chuckled... Read more
