Falls, Ranier & Rainy Lake
-
Situated in the heart of Voyageurs National Park, at the very northern
edge of Minnesota, is Rainy Lake. Here is true wilderness at its finest.
Yet it is incredibly accessible... a land of living history. One can
almost hear the soft splash of canoe paddles dipping into pristine waters
as the voyageurs made their way across the border country. Rainy Lake is,
arguably, one of the finest walleye fisheries in the country. And
Rainy also has its fair share of numerous other game fish. However, it
isnt just the fishing that brings countless thousands of visitors to
the area every year. Every one of the four seasons is a taste treat for
every one of your senses. And no matter what it is you are in search of
from camping to fishing to sightseeing to just plain enjoying the
unspoiled beauty of nature Rainy Lake has it all - a great place to
vacation!

Filleting
Walleye
I saw my first walleye cleaned and filleted by

Fishing Report
-
January 7, 2008
Portable gear and snowmobiles continue to be the
only way to fish Rainy Lake. Some very nice Walleye and Northern
Pike have been pulled through the ice around American Narrows,
Black Bay and Cranberry Bay. The best bite is in water 25-to-35
feet deep right now. Be sure to check ice depth frequently and
avoid areas with current. There are pockets of slush even where
the ice is thick enough to support a sled or ATV.
Snowmobile trails are in pretty good shape, with just a few
spots not groomed. The green trail has been staked on Black Bay,
it leads to the Kabetogama community and is staked to Ash River.
The other lake trails remain closed due to thin ice. Some
portions of land trails have not been groomed because low areas
havent frozen enough to support the groomer.
Most area cross country ski trails are open, groomed and tracked
and snowshoe trails within the Voyageurs National Park are open.
Snowshoes and skis are available at the Rainy Lake Visitor
Center Wednesdays-through-Sundays.
