French fur trappers – known as voyageurs – were the first to settle the
vast and wild areas of northern Minnesota in the early 1800’s. Working
with the Ojibwe Indians, they traveled the waters in huge birch bark
canoes, singing as they paddled, seeking the beaver for its luxurious
pelt. As the fur trade dwindled, the logging industry took its place
and the forests of Northern Minnesota began to fall to the ax of the
lumberjack. This attracted businessmen as well as farmers and
homesteaders. Just as the big pine trees started to go the way of the
beaver pelt, a new industry began to take their place: tourism.

One of the major thoroughfares to
bring tourists to Voyageur Country was State Highway 53, and one of the
towns to spring up along it was Orr, Minnesota. Located on the shores
of beautiful Pelican Lake, Orr offers a unique combination of modern
convenience in a true wilderness environment. Orr is incredibly
close to Voyageur's National Park, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and
Ely, International Falls and much more.
No matter what reason or what season may bring
you to Orr, there is something for everyone, all year 'round. Orr
will keep you busy whether you are here on business or for that coveted
annual vacation. Relax and enjoy all that the north country has to
offer: fishing, hiking, bird and wildlife watching, skiing, snowmobiling
and hunting, along with exploring our beautiful north woods home.
