If you can imagine a portion of the north woods that boasts over one thousand lakes and twenty-four towns, you can imagine a very beautiful part of this country: the Ottertail Area of western Minnesota. It also includes the town of Otter Tail (population 451 in the 2000 census), as well as the county that goes by the same name. And at least according to one well-used source of information (Wikipedia), "long before there were roads in this area of the country, the best method of travel was by water. Two of these water highways are the Leaf Lake chain, which drains south to the Gulf of Mexico, and Otter Tail Lake, which drains north to Hudson Bay."
