Lake
Michigan - Wisconsin Ports
The Great Lakes the way I
learned to remember them was that the first letter of each lake
spelled out the word HOMES. Using that mnemonic, I would never
forget five of the greatest resources in the whole world. But there
is one of those lakes that has always been special to me: Lake
Michigan. By volume, it is the second largest of the five with
almost 1200 cubic miles of water in places over 900 feet deep
and over 22,000 square miles of surface area touching the shores of
four different states: Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.
Its fresh
water allows a multitude of species to thrive beneath, as well as
above, its majestic waves, provides drinking water to countless
millions close to and far from its shores, and still remains as a
navigable route for small watercraft and large freighters with
ultimate access to both the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
In our own
history, we have both used and abused the fertile waters of Lake
Michigan and are only now beginning to realize the tremendous
importance of this vast resource as we strive to return it to a more
pristine condition. There is a long and rich history of this
Greatest of Lakes, awaiting discovery by any traveler who wishes to
take the time to avail himself of it. And there are hundreds of
ports and places of interest to explore, recreation, culture and
much more. Dont wait. Discover Lake Michigan again
for the first
time!
